Are We Preparing Our Children for Life or Only for Exams?
After more than 40 years in education, one thing has become increasingly clear to me: Children need more than knowledge.
Children Need More Than Knowledge
They need life skills. Of course, academic learning is important. Reading, writing, mathematics, science, and all the subjects children learn at school build a strong foundation.
But what happens when a child faces disappointment, conflict, pressure, uncertainty, or a difficult decision? Do they know how to manage their emotions? Can they communicate honestly? Can they solve problems, ask for help, and keep going when things become difficult? These are not “extra” skills. These are essential skills for life.
During my years as a teacher, I have seen the difference it makes when children are given opportunities to understand themselves, develop resilience, practise empathy, and discover their own strengths.
In 2024, I had the privilege of working with my husband, Tinie, presenting an ATKV-accredited Life Skills programme to over 1 500 primary school learners.
Four Pillars for Life
The programme was built around four important pillars:
Learn to Know — Understanding yourself and your emotions.
Learn to Be — Building confidence, resilience, and self-awareness.
Learn to Do — Making responsible choices and solving problems.
Learn to Live Together — Building relationships through empathy and respect.
These lessons became even more meaningful when life tested us personally. Through Tinie’s health challenges, the very principles we had shared with children, resilience, perseverance, mindfulness, and faith, became reminders of what truly matters.
This journey inspired the creation of: Survive. Discover. Grow. — The Island Adventure A story where five friends discover that the greatest challenges are not only about what happens around us, but also about what happens within us.
My hope is that this book will encourage conversations with children about emotions, friendships, courage, choices, and personal growth.
Preparing Children for Life
Because education is not only about preparing children for the next test.
It is about preparing them for life.
Continue the Journey
SURVIVE. DISCOVER. GROW. – The Island Adventure brings these life skills to life through story. Young readers explore emotions, choices, resilience, empathy, problem-solving and relationships as they follow five children on an unforgettable island adventure.
